In the late1950’s there was a weight limit put on Cookham bridge. Passengers had to get off the single decker bus, and walk across the bridge. The bus crossed the bridge at walking pace. We were all on the bridge in the same place at the same time, could never work out the reason for it. Cars were so few and far between there were never many on the bridge at the same time but they were suppose to slow dow. What repaire were needed I don’t know. There was never anyone working on it.

If I remember correctly, even the Thames Valley buses had to stop and pay a penny
