This looks interesting, on tomorrow night (8th May)…
Many of us wander around churchyards and cemeteries, tracing family members or just out of interest. This illustrated talk by Kevin Varty explores the sometimes hidden meanings of the symbols which are often carved into the headstones, revealing a lost language from the past. The talk also shows how these symbols have been used by the funeral business, especially during Victorian times.

Adam Elder has cars in his blood or to be more exact…. fast cars. Growing up in Bourne End, many of us know Adam & would certainly agree he was born to do this.
You may have heard of drifting…. well Gymkhana GRiD involves a lot of “donuts”, tyre smoke & powerslides making it an exciting sport to follow so the documentary “The Road To Gymkhana” which premieres on 27th March, could be an interesting film for you to watch. Four big names in the Gymkhana Grid world… Ken Block, Petter Solberg, Oliver Solberg & Shane Lynch (THE Shane Lynch of Boyzone), follow Adam & 5 other drivers during their everyday lives as well as their racing careers.
The film highlights how young men who work fulltime in other industries, can race against the world’s best without coming from a wealthy & privileged background. The film crews followed Adam to work, to the garage where Tony Elder, his Dad helps with the mechanics & to his home, interviewing the family who have supported him in many different ways for the past 4 years.
The film details how with focus, determination & a lot of hard work, you can achieve success. It shows the difference between Adam who puts every spare minute & penny into working towards his success compared to young men who are on million pound budgets. Adam has managed to achieve a standard in 4 years that usually takes others 10 years. Adam said “I have to make great sacrifices in order to follow my dream but it’s all worth it although I couldn’t do it without the huge support I receive from my family & fiancé, Lindsay.”
In the days after the premiere he has been invited to appear on a radio show, photo shoots & there is a possible breakfast TV interview. Adam also has 2 businesses to help financially, he has a recovery vehicle & is on call for breakdowns & has just become a UK distributor for Zestino Tyres who are also one of his sponsors. Sponsors are incredibly hard to get but he has many including Competition Clutch, EBC Brakes, Everything Drift, Rock Tech Wrapping & Funk Motor Sport amongst others, not forgetting Bourne End Garages.
Competing in over 80 small races & 4 big events in-order to get this far, his first “big” event was Gymkhana Grid in Madrid, a European Event & more recently Gymkhana Grid in South Africa which was televised by Sky TV in December. When I asked what other racing interests him, he said he would love to compete in World Rally Cross events one day.
This all came about after a serious brush with the law over a driving incident made Adam stop & think about how he could channel his passion. After following another local man, Luke Woodham who Adam now often competes against, he realised this could be the ideal way to turn his passion into a legal career. Hard work & many of thousands of pounds later, here he is…. waiting to hear if he qualifies for the World Finals in South Africa later this year.
“The Road To Gymkhana” will become available shortly after the premiere on Amazon Prime. If you fancy watching Adam race, he will be competing in Coventry Motofest on 2nd & 3rd June 2018 taking place in Coventry city centre.
To follow Adam or if you are interested in Zestino Tyres you can contact him via his Facebook page.

I wrote this last year & can confirm that Zylkene has helped… my dog is on them again this year.
I hate this time of year, purely because I hate to see my little dog suffering when the fireworks begin. My usually verbal & confident little dog turns into a nervous wreck who shakes & pants the entire evening. I do take all the usual measures of turning the television up loud, closing the curtains etc. but he can hear them long before I even realise they have started going off. His hearing is too good!
Tonight we have some hope though. I called Hall Place Vets & they suggested Zylkene capsules to take once a day for the next 10 days which will hopefully calm him down. They don’t sedate your pet, just make him feel calmer & therefore less ditressed. If you have the same problem, please do try these pills. For Vinnie’s size (Jack Russell x Shih Tzu – yes, a Jack Shit!), Zylkene costs just £6.68…

I have just been updating the events calendar both on here & on Facebook & thought it would be useful to mention that Laura Manning’s FB group, Bourne End Community Events & Activities Group has a good constant flow of a variety of things to get involved in. Here is her description of the group –
Welcome to this local Community Events and Activities Group covering Bourne End Bucks and now also Wooburn Green and Flackwell Heath. I hope that it can become a platform to let people know about local events and also to get feedback from people as to what events they would like to see happening in Bourne End, Wooburn and Flackwell Heath!
We have great facilities including Community Centres ,Church Halls, Social Clubs and a British Legion & Pubs that need supporting & need to be used to their full potential – do others agree ? disagree? What events would you like to see held locally? I hope you will join me on here.
Laura is also looking for help for the Community Centre Village fete on 27th June. If you can help or would like to hold a stall / table, contact her via the FB group.
